Product Review: Ariat Iceberg Zip H2O Insulated Boots - From RoadBike January/February 2010

Product Evaluation: Rider Gear
Ariat Iceberg Zip H2O Insulated Boots

By Tricia Szulewski

Well-known equestrian footwear company Ariat recently released a limited line of motorcycle boots. But even before this announcement, I’d happened upon the company’s offerings while browsing at Sneakers To Boots in Pine Bush, New York. Impressed with the fit and finish of the company’s boots, I pondered the similarities between horse and motorcycle riders, and decided that the Ariat Iceberg Zip H2O boots were worthy of a two-wheeled test.

Billed as paddock boots, this simply means that they are made to withstand the rigors of what the barn has in store. Sporty styling, a low heel, and easy to put on, these waterproof boots include a breathable membrane lining and sealed seams that effectively keep moisture away from your feet. Ariat’s advanced torque stability (ATS) technology, used in many of its high-quality boots, was designed to support and cushion the foot as you move, which promotes good posture and reduces fatigue, whether in the saddle or on the ground.

Underneath the orthotic insole, a composite-fiber shank provides strength and stability. The flexible outsole is made of carbon rubber Duratread, which is highly resistant to acidic waste (!), easy to clean, and provides good insulation. All this, combined with the soft, antimicrobial lining and Thinsulate insulation, cradles my tootsies in cold-weather comfort I’ve yet to experience in traditional motorcycle boots. However, the Iceberg’s zipper is located on top of the foot, and was uncomfortably stiff at first, digging into my foot when my riding position required a forward bend at the ankle. It took awhile, but I evenually broke them in and isn’t an issue any longer.

Delve into the company’s enormously extensive collection of styles on its web site, and you’ll find many different versions of the Iceberg H2O, including youth sizes, tall, and laced versions. Or check out all the other styles of Western, English, work, and motorcycle boots available. RB

The gel-cushioned orthotic insole conforms to your feet and provides good shock absorption.
