Product Evaluation: Rider Gear By Terry O’Brien Writing a pants review is always tricky. When referring to the pants, I’m always tempted to write “they are ” — but then, it’s not really a “pair” — two — of pants, is it? Then again, calling them “it” sounds awkward. Fieldsheer calls this product the Fieldsheer Street Pant, so don’t get your pant in a bind as you read this, because I’m going to refer to it as just that. Fieldsheer’s Street Pant is so named for the simple reason that it’s as comfortable to wear strutting around off the bike as it is when riding. It’s not meant to be changed into and out of; it’s designed to be worn as your pant for the day, not over another pair. The fit is similar to that of a classic relaxed jean with stretch panels around the knees and crotch, along with a stretch waistband, which adds to the functional comfort. If you can’t imagine leaving your prized stainless steel belt buckle at home, don’t fret. It also has belt loops so you can snug it up even more. The Street Pant is a relatively lightweight riding pant. The outer shell is made of Fieldsheer’s 600-denier Carbolex, which is treated to be 100 percent waterproof, and it has a breathable lining. There is armor, but because this is a more relaxed, casual pant, it’s not overwhelming and cumbersome. There are memory-foam hip pads, as well as CE-approved knee armor that is adjustable to three positions in the pant leg. Velcro closures mate the armor to the wearer’s knee. You’ve got typical jean pockets in this pant, two in the back and two in the front, plus a coin pocket. My only request would be the addition of some sort of pocket closure to keep your belongings secure, like a snap or some Velcro. I found the pant very comfortable while riding and would have no problems wearing these for a cruise and then into a restaurant for a bite. All in all, at only about 80 bucks, I would absolutely recommend the Fieldsheer Street Pant as an item for your road warrior closet. RB
