Firstgear Denali Jacket

Product Evaluation: Rider Gear
Firstgear Denali Jacket

By Brian Burbank

If the devil is in the details, Firstgear’s Denali jacket has such attention to the little things that there’s no room for the devil. The jacket has more pockets than one of Houdini’s suits. The inner front vertical pocket has a bright red zipper pull that stands out from the black interior, making it easier to find without opening the jacket fully. The lower front pocket flaps have a small rubber tab on one corner so you can grasp it with gloves on. The cellphone pocket is the right size for most of today’s phones. There is also a large pocket in the back that can hold a spare pair of gloves, or some other item that you don’t need right away but want to have with you. All of the pockets are easily accessible and designed to be used with gloves on.

The front vents work well, allowing the air to flow in then exit the large rear vent. However, the zipper pulls for the front vents are small and hard to operate with gloves on. The collar is nicely padded, with a snap to hold it in place. I prefer snaps because, while offering less adjustment, they don’t wear out like Velcro does.

The cuff straps are made of a rubberized material making it easy (yet again) to grasp them with gloved hands and cinch the sleeves. In addition, there are adjustable compression straps on the upper part of the sleeves that give the jacket a snug fit and keep you from looking like the Incredible Hulk riding down the road. The adjustable waist tabs allow you to custom-tailor the jacket, depending how many layers you have on and whether you prefer a snug or loose fit. There are zippers located on the sleeves and lower sides to further create room and space for different preferences and accompanying riding gear.

The waterproof membrane keeps items in the pockets dry, as well as yourself. The double storm flap and rain gutter over the front zipper is easy to use and prevents the rain from working its way in.

This jacket is a precision piece of riding gear made for riders who appreciate attention to detail. RB
