Product Review: G-Line Bonzai and La Jolla Jackets - From RoadBike May 2006

Real Rider Gear
G-Line Bonzai and La Jolla Jackets

By Jessica Prokup and Tricia Szulewski

Despite the fact that the motorcycle industry finally accepts that women aren’t just passengers anymore, it’s still hard to find good-quality riding apparel to fit our various shapes and sizes. Many manufacturers offer women’s lines, but, more times than not, the colors and styles aren’t what we’re looking for. (We’ll pass on the hearts and roses, thank you.) And a lot of the fashionable gear isn’t really designed for riding.

G-Line is a new line of apparel designed for and by women riders. The debut selection of jackets and pants offers a variety of choices for real riders, from leathers with protective panels to textiles for touring. And, thankfully, the designs are feminine without being gaudy.

The Bonzai (shown on Trish, right) and La Jolla (shown on Jessica) jackets are made with quality materials and top-notch construction, with styling that’s flattering and cool. The sporty Bonzai is decorated with flashy white flowers and swirls running down the sleeves, while the La Jolla has a clean, sophisticated look. Both have features that make use of some of the most comfortable and protective materials available today.

On the Bonzai, flexible shoulder patches and stretch Cordura on the inner arms make the jacket comfortable right from the start. Perforated leather in the front and back offers ventilation, while a zip-out quilted liner keeps you warm. The removable CE armor at the elbows and shoulders is extremely flexible, and the back is covered with a comfort-foam spine protector. In addition, the collarbone and lower back have reinforced leather panels.

There’s also reflective piping, a soft suede collar liner, Velcro collar and sleeve closures, and four zippered pockets, two inside and two outside. For those who wear the matching Bonzai pants, there’s even a full-circumference zipper to connect them.

The La Jolla is a little less structured — it has sexy lines and a relaxed fit, with incredibly soft leather that needs no breaking in. But it’s very much a rider’s jacket. The sleeves are pre-curved to a riding position and house zippered armpit vents. Pockets at the shoulders, elbows, and along the spine make room for optional, removable body armor. The jacket also has stylish snap closures at the neck and cuffs, zippered outer and inner pockets, and reflective piping. Doesn’t hurt that it looks sharp out on the town, too.

Hot styling, comfort, protection — the women at G-Line did their homework. Now women can look as good as they ride. RB
