Book/DVD Review: "Haynes Service & Repair Manual " - From RoadBike June 2006

DIY For Dummies
Haynes Service & Repair Manual

I keep my owner’s manual on my bike at all times, just in case. However, while it gives me basic information about service intervals and how to change the oil, it’s really just a starting point for do-it-yourselfers like me.

When I did some upgrades on a Bandit last fall (featured in the February/March and April 2006 issues), I discovered that the Bandit manual didn’t offer a wealth of detailed information, either. So, I ordered a Haynes service book for the bike, and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s like an owner’s manual on steroids.

The book is chock-full of useful stuff for everyone from beginners to experienced mechanics. It starts out with a history of Suzuki and the Bandit, and leads into pre-ride inspection, routine maintenance, and unscheduled maintenance. But, unlike the OEM manual, it includes step-by-step photos and helpful hints.

The meat of the book is detailed information on how to do repairs and other work on the engine, transmission, fuel and exhaust systems, ignition, electrical system, and chassis components. Each section is broken down into numbered steps and shown with corresponding photos and captions. In cases where one step varies among models, the step is explained for each model. All projects are rated as to their complexity, ranging from easy to very difficult.

The back section includes full-color wiring diagrams and information about tools, lubricants and fluids, security devices, and properly storing your bike. One handy section offers checklists for figuring out common motorcycle problems. And, of course, no good service manual would be complete without a glossary of technical terms.

No matter what your technical skills, if you ride a motorcycle, you should read your owner’s manual. And if you plan to service your bike yourself, I’d recommend upgrading to a Haynes book. The company offers a long list of manuals for many makes and models. RB
