Product Review: Shark RSX Holoyang Helmet - From RoadBike Nov/Dec 2007

Shark Helmet

Product Evaluation: Helmet Of The Month
Shark RSX Holoyang Helmet

By Tricia Szulewski

Always scouting for the latest and greatest gear and accessories, the colors and graphics of the Shark RSX series of helmets grabbed my attention. I like a sporty design, but many other current models use too many bright colors or contain crude cartoon graphics that overwhelm my eyeballs. The design of the Holoyang full-face helmet suits my style perfectly. The yin-yang symbol represents how I strive to achieve balance in my life — with motorcycling playing a key role.

As cool as a helmet looks, if it doesn’t fit well or provide great protection, it’s worthless. Well-known outside the US and in the racing scene, Shark helmets are beginning to show up here in America. The RSX series is the company’s higher-end line of racetrack-quality lids. Each features a lightweight aerodynamic Carbon/Kevlar shell, a sturdy 3mm anti-scratch, anti-fog visor, and six removable, washable foam pads that are covered with Coolmax fabric. In addition, the RSX keeps your head cool and comfortable with a top vent that opens with a click of the release button. The air is directed through interior ducts and out through a rear vent. Another push-button vent on the chinbar works along with the removable anti-fog breath/nose guard to eliminate any shield fogging. I even removed the guard and experienced no fogging whatsoever.

The visor is easily removed via the push-button, quick-release system. No tools are necessary, but Shark provides a hex key to adjust the visor friction. With no incremental opening stays, it may become necessary to eventually tighten the visor; however, after a few months of use mine still stays partially open, even at high speeds.

The plush, padded cheek pads and a double-D chin strap keeps the RSX tight and secure. The only problem with the super-comfy padding is that there are no seams at the temples to accommodate a pair of eyeglasses that extend wider than your face. This is important for riders who wear prescription eyewear. Always try on helmets while wearing your glasses before making the final purchase. RB

The RSX’s integrated airduct system is the best I’ve tested.
