Held Hawk In my closet, I keep a “box-o-gloves.” It’s the collection I’ve amassed from years of motorcycling. When I’m preparing for a ride on a chilly, damp morning, I’ll rummage through the box and dig out the thickest, warmest all-weather glove I can find. Lately, the winner in that category has been my Held Hawk Gore-Tex gloves. I can always count on them to keep me comfortable when the elements conspire against me. The gloves have a waterproof leather palm and a stretch-fabric back, and the Gore-Tex interior keeps my digits nice and toasty. I also found the sizing to be spot-on with my usual glove size. I don’t feel any seams or threading inside the fingers while I’m wearing the gloves, which helps prevent fatigue on long, chilly rides. Another nice feature is the rubber squeegee on the left index finger, which is handy for wiping rain and mist off my face shield. It works as well as the wipers on a car, if you don’t mind the manual labor. — SL
J&P Thinsulate/Enprotex Gloves One item that I always take with me on a ride is an extra pair of gloves. I discovered long ago that if your hands are cold, wet, or achy, it can affect your riding skills in a dangerous way. Cold fingers, for instance, are slow to grab a brake lever. For $25.99, you can’t go wrong with J&P’s winter glove. The shell features windproof ballistic nylon for protection and Lycra for a comfortable fit. The soft lining, made of Thinsulate and Enprotex, does a good job of insulating my hands from cold weather. The wrist is secured with Velcro and covered by a nylon gaiter, which keeps rain from seeping in at the cuffs. Best of all, the gloves have neoprene grip patches on the fingers and a rain wiper on each thumb. These gloves are great for crisp mornings and rainy rides. On the coldest days, when I use heated gear, I take these as a backup in case my electrics get wet. — TS RB SOURCES Held Hawk Gore-Tex Glove $139.95 Fairchild Sports Thinsulate/Enprotex Glove $25.99 J&P Cycles |
