Product Evaluation: Rider Gear By Evans Brasfield Traditionally, motorcycle boots that were intended for daily commuter or touring use were pretty boring items, lacking pizzazz. With a design that is as eye-catching as it is functional, Joe Rocket’s Meteor boot isn’t in danger of falling into this trap. The Meteor’s upper is significantly shorter than most boots. While this does lessen shin protection from errant rocks, for some people it may also be more comfortable when walking around. The shin flap is secured with a sturdy Velcro closure and features an integral gauntlet to assist in waterproofing the boot. The adjustable ankle strap allows the rider to fine-tune the fit to accommodate different sizes. Rather than build a small ankle cup into the boot’s interior, the ankle’s interior padding is ample and is covered by an exterior plastic side-impact protector. The remaining exterior construction is leather with a grippy rubber sole. Long distance riders will appreciate the interior’s breathability and the Dry-Tech moisture wicking liner. Most importantly, the boot is 100 percent waterproof. Due to its sturdiness, the Meteor takes a little while to break in and can feel a bit stiff. However, once you’ve softened up the exterior, it’s all-day comfortable. The ankle padding and adjustable strap make it possible to get a secure fit even with narrow feet. The shape of the heel and arch provide positive positioning of the boot on footpegs, and a reflective area on the heel helps nighttime conspicuity. Since these boots were tested in rain-free Southern California, we submerged them in a tub of water to measure their watertightness. Submitting the Meteor boots to an overnight soak resulted in a completely dry interior. Since this type of exposure to water is way beyond what could be experienced on the road, the boots should remain completely dry in a daylong rainy ride. RB
