While the latest rage with full-face helmets seems to be incorporating expensive electronics, internal sunscreens, and fancy, wind-tunnel-tested vents, there is still a huge market for your basic, DOT-approved, inexpensive full-face helmet. AFX’s FX-90 speaks to this audience. The FX-90’s shell is made of an aerodynamic composite poly alloy, and the large helmet weighs in at only 3 pounds. The hypoallergenic, removable interior lining and cheek pads are made of plush, washable nylon. Venting is well-placed and effective, my favorite being the closable chin vent, which, along with the removable breath guard, helps keep shield fogging in check.
The four-stepped clear shield is optically correct, scratch-resistant, and protects against UV rays. Tinted shields are available and replacing them takes less than a minute with no tools.

The FX-90’s thin shell and ample room for speakers made the installation of my Interphone communication system easy. Unfortunately, I was told that the wind noise coming from the microphone, which rests behind the chin, was too loud. Surprising, since I didn’t notice an unusual amount of wind noise.
The artistic side of me appreciates the quality of the graphics on the silver multi that I chose. The black and white AFX logo becomes part of the design instead of jumping off of it like a 3-D billboard. The Pearl White base has a sparkly undertone, while the thin silver pinstripes that outline most of the graphic elements give the design its real flair. If this design doesn’t suit you, however, the FX-90 is available in a number of other graphics and colors, including solids. Sizes range from XS to 2XL.
The lightweight nature, comfortable fit, and low price point secures the FX-90’s place as a real winner in the full-face helmet market. RB — Tricia Szulewski
